Celebrating Women’s Day: A Tribute to Strength, Flavour, and Legacy

Celebrating Women’s Day: A Tribute to Strength, Flavour, and Legacy

Every year on March 8th, the world comes together to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD)—a day dedicated to recognising the achievements, struggles, and contributions of women across all walks of life. While the movement has grown in scope, its essence remains the same: celebrating empowerment, advocating for equality, and acknowledging the invaluable roles women play in shaping our societies.

A Brief History of Women’s Day

The roots of International Women’s Day trace back to the early 1900s when women across the globe started voicing their demands for better working conditions, equal pay, and voting rights. The first recorded celebration was in 1909 in the United States, organized by the Socialist Party of America. In 1910, the idea gained international recognition when Clara Zetkin, a German feminist, proposed the establishment of a global Women’s Day at the International Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen.

By 1917, the movement had taken an even stronger political stance when Russian women, protesting against war and food shortages, helped trigger the Russian Revolution. Their actions led to March 8th being officially declared Women’s Day in 1922 by Vladimir Lenin as an honour to the role of women in the revolution.
